 Medical Conditions    Uterine Fibroids

Uterine Fibroids

These are non-cancerous growths of the wall of the uterus.  The uterus is the reproductive organ at the top of the birth canal.  Its wall is made of muscle and this is where the tumors grow.

Fibroid tumors, also called leiomyomas, occur commonly in women.  Some studies estimate that more than 50% of women may have some amount of fibroids.  Most women with fibroids have no problems and require no treatment.  Surgery or other treatments may be needed when fibroids cause painful or heavy periods, pelvic pain, or abdominal pressure.  Fibroids can require emergency treatment if they cause sudden, sharp pelvic pain, but this is rare.

Surgical treatments for fibroids include myomectomy and hysterectomy.  There are other non-surgical therapies available for selected patients.  Dr. Pizarro does not perform the non-surgical procedures for fibroids, but he would be happy to discuss them with you as part of your consultation and refer you to a non-surgical provider.
