Hysteroscopic Surgery Hysteroscopy allows the Gynecologic Surgeon to look inside the uterus in a minimally invasive way. While you are under anesthesia, the opening of the uterus is made larger (dilated). A small camera is then placed directly inside the uterus and a picture is seen on a monitor. At the same time, some of the tissue inside the uterus can be sampled (a test called curettage). The patient should be able to go home the same day. Recovery is short, with slight cramping only. This type of surgery is used to help find the cause of abnormal bleeding from the uterus. Dr. Pizarro sometimes recommends this surgery when examinations, blood tests, and ultrasounds do not give clear diagnosis. Hysteroscopy allows the doctor to diagnose and sometimes treat conditions inside the uterus that can cause bleeding. In women with abnormal periods, or those who restart uterine bleeding after a long time without periods (postmenapausal bleeding). Hysteroscopy can lead to very useful information about the nature of the problem. |
