Myomectomy

Patients with symptoms due to uterine fibroids who do not wish to have hysterectomy may be candidates for this operation.  In this procedure, the fibroids themselves are removed from the uterine wall, while allowing the rest of the uterus to remain.  In many cases the fibroids will grow back over time.  For this reason, women with fibroids who wish to preserve the uterus should carefully consider their goals in deciding to have procedures other than hysterectomy.  This is especially true because myomectomy carries many of the same risks as hysterectomy.  The advantage of myomectomy is that the uterus is preserved.  This is important to patients when considering issues related to body image or future childbearing.  In most cases, myomectomy can be performed using small incisions or entirely with a laparoscope.
