Surgery and Urinary Catheters

After any gynecologic surgery, Dr. Pizarro may determine that you need a urinary catheter at least overnight to closely monitor how much urine is being made.  This is a very important vital sign.  Also, sometimes after surgery or other pelvic procedures (even C-Sections or childbirth), women are unable to urinate on their own because the bladder becomes stunned.  This is especially the case when women have pain after the procedure.  For this reason, a patient may need to be sent home with a urinary catheter until she can go to the bathroom on her own.

A patient may be sent home with a catheter and asked to return several days later to try again.  She may even need a catheter for several weeks, especially if she had surgery on her bladder or vagina.  This is not a setback.   It is sometimes part of the healing process and is not something that should discourage a patient.

After surgery patients may also experience other bladder problems such as leakage or increased need to urinate.  This happens rarely and most are resolved over a period of weeks.

Please contact Dr. Pizarro's office with any questions that you may have about this process if you need a catheter after surgery.
