Urethral Sling for Urinary Leakage

One of the most commonly performed and most effective surgeries for treatment of urinary incontinence (leakage of urine) is called the urethral sling.  When a woman is experiencing a cetain type of leakage, called stress urinary incontinence, this surgery can lead to a cure in the vast majority of cases.  Stress urinary incontinence is typically diagnosed when women complain of losing the ability to stay dry during coughing, laughing, straining, or sneezing.

The urethral sling was first introduced in 1907.  Modern techniques are based on that procedure.  They involve placing a thin strip of fine woven plastic material under the urethra (the opening of the bladder), which has lost its normal support in patients with stress incontinence.  This material helps to hold up the urethra during straining, coughing, etc.  This allows the patient to stay dry.

When the urodynamic testing is performed and verifies the diagnosis of stress incontinence, a procedure such as the urethral sling can be recommended.  Dr. Pizarro performs this procedure using a minimally invasive approach- one of the most revolutionary and studied surgeries in recent memory.  Dr. Pizarro will recommend this procedure sometimes by itself and on occasion in conjunction with surgeries for disorders of pelvic support.
