Surgeries Ovarian Cysts & Tumors
Removal of Ovarian Cysts & Tumors Some patients with ovarian cysts require surgery to remove either the mass itself or the entire ovary. In general, this is reserved for patients with large, persistent growths, or when the growth is causing symptoms. Sometimes it is also necessary to remove the uterus (hysterectomy) at the same time. In many cases these procedures can be performed through small incisions using laparoscopy. Cystectomy is the term used for surgery to remove the cyst only, leaving normal ovarian tissue in place. Oophorectomy refers to the removal of the ovary. When the ovary has to be removed, the fallopian tube is also removed. In reproductive-age women, when only one ovary is removed, hormone replacement therapy is not needed, because the other ovary will provide the needed estrogen. In postmenopausal women with tumors requiring removal, generally Dr. Pizarro recommends removal of both ovaries. |
