Endometrial Ablation
Endometrial ablation is a minimally invasive procedure for women who experience abnormal, heavy periods. In as little as 90 seconds of treatment, with no incisions from this outpatient procedure, many women can find relief from heavy periods without the side effects of hormones and with less risk than hysterectomy. Endometrial ablation works directly on the lining of the uterusto reduce and in many cases stop bleeding. A small instrument is advanced into the uterus and activated briefly to achieve the desired result. Although the endometrial ablation is generally very safe and easy to perform, patients have to be chosen carefully. Risks of the procedure are rare and include injury to organs, pain, and the need for further treatments if bleeding continues. Women who are able to have children should use proper contraception after treatment.
