 Doctor's Note    Urinary Incontinence

Note from Dr. Pizarro - Urinary Incontinence in Women
August 2008

Topic of Urinary Incontinence in Women

One of Dr. Pizarro’s specialties is the care of women with urinary incontinence.  Women and their primary care doctors can be reassured that this condition is not “just part of aging.”  Most women suffering from urinary incontinence can be helped, often without surgery or medication.  Unfortunately, too many women have the impression that their condition is “normal” and do not discuss it with their doctors.

Dr. Pizarro takes the time with each visit to discuss issues of bladder health with his patients.  He recommends diagnostic testing such as cystoscopy and urodynamics to help determine the best course of action for women with urinary incontinence or loss of control.  Most patients can be helped without surgery.  For those patients whose symptoms have not responded to conservative care, Dr. Pizarro may recommend surgeries such as TVT urethral sling.

A recent study has found that less than half of women with bladder problems seek care for it.  Only 55% of women who actually discuss their urinary incontinence with their doctors report that something was done about it.  The authors of the study recommended that since so many treatments are available for urinary incontinence, that women should be educated about them more actively.
