 Doctor's Note    Pelvic Prolapse

Note from Dr. Pizarro - Pelvic-Floor Reconstruction

Pelvic-Floor Reconstruction:  Restoring support & providing relief

When a woman’s pelvic floor muscles weaken, the organs begin to descend, or “prolapse,” from their normal position. Pelvic organ prolapse can affect the bladder, rectum, small intestine, uterus or vaginal vault.  It can cause urinary incontinence, sensations of pressure or fullness or feelings of “falling out.”  Prolapse can also be mild, moderate or severe.  In some cases, it can be progressive and can potentially lead to disfigurement.  In addition, women are often traumatized by changes in their bladder and bowel habits, body image and sexual relationships.

Understanding the Causes and Diagnosis of Pelvic Prolapse

Although childbirth is thought to be the most common initial cause of damage to the pelvic floor, there are many factors that seem to contribute: genetics, tissue dysfunction, certain surgeries, hormone insufficiency, obesity, repeated strain and others.  Regardless of its causes, prolapse is primarily diagnosed through examination and medical history, though other testing may be needed to determine the extent of the problem and the best treatments.

For lasting relief, trust training, credentials and state-of-the-art capability.  Treatment of pelvic prolapse generally involves reconstruction of the pelvic floor.  As with any surgery, the training, credentials, skill and capability of the surgeon performing your procedure directly influence the quality of your surgical outcome.

A board-certified gynecologic surgeon, Dr. Antonio R. Pizarro offers the very latest in minimally invasive repair of pelvic prolapse. In addition to his intensive training in female pelvic surgery and reconstruction at a world-renowned institution, Dr. Pizarro performed Louisiana’s first robotics-assisted pelvic floor reconstruction surgery.  With the surgical robot, Dr. Pizarro can repair pelvic organ prolapse with the utmost in visibility, control and precision. The benefits to you are smaller incisions, less scarring, less risk of infection, a shorter hospital stay and less postoperative pain. Yet, Dr. Pizarro is also committed to performing surgery only when it is the most appropriate treatment option and to offering nonsurgical treatments when that is the woman’s preference.
